Scuffed Protection turns parts of a server world into protected regions. Inside one you may be unable to build, open chests, use doors, fight other players or even walk in, depending on how the staff set it up. This page explains what you will notice as a player. Players have no commands of their own: everything is set up by staff.

🛠️ Running a server? Requirements, staff commands, permissions and configuration live in the Scuffed Protection server guide.

What a protected region is

A region is a group of map chunks (each chunk is 32 x 32 blocks and covers the full height of the world). A whole world can also be one region, which is how spawn and hub worlds are usually locked down. Every region has its own rules, so two neighbouring regions can behave differently.

Each region keeps a list of members. Members are the people the region is meant for, such as the owner of a plot or a builder team. Members get through most restrictions that stop everyone else. Staff can also mark players as exempt, which lifts nearly all of the region's restrictions for that player. Land outside any region, in a world that has no region rules, is unprotected and works as normal.

Building and breaking blocks

By default a region only lets its members build. If you are not allowed:

  • Placing, breaking and mining blocks is cancelled.
  • You see a red message such as [ScuffedProtection] You can't build in 'Spawn'. (staff can replace the wording per region).
  • The message is rate limited, so holding the mouse button does not flood your chat.

The same rule covers more than placing and breaking:

ActionBlocked when you cannot build
Harvesting crops by hand or with a sickleYes
Hammer and other multi-block editsYes
Fertilizing soil, using a watering can, advancing crop growthYes
Changing a block's state or cycling block variantsYes
Pouring or draining water and lava with bucketsYes (placing fluid has its own extra rule)
Capturing animals or mobs with a capture crateYes
Setting off an explosion with its centre inside the regionYes

A region can also be set so that everyone may build, or so that nobody may, members included.

When a region is inside a guild claim from Endless Guilds, the guild's permissions apply as well. A player who only holds the guild's harvest permission can still harvest plain crops by hand or with a sickle. Breaking a crop that regrows after harvest (eternal crops, apples, berries) still counts as building.

Chests, doors, benches and other blocks

Using things inside a region is controlled separately from building. By default, non-members cannot:

ThingRuleDefault for non-members
Open chests, barrels and other containersChest AccessBlocked
Use doors, gates and trapdoorsDoor AccessBlocked
Use other interactive blocks (levers, benches and similar)Use / InteractBlocked
Sit in chairs and other seatsSit in ChairsAllowed
Craft itemsCraftingAllowed
Drop items from your inventoryItem DropAllowed
Pick up items from the groundItem PickupAllowed

When one of these is blocked the action simply does not happen. There is no chat message for chests, doors, use, crafting, pickup or drop. Items lying in a region that blocks pickup cannot be picked up by walking over them either.

Fighting inside a region

RuleWhat it means for you
PvP offPlayers cannot damage each other. The check uses both your position and your target's, so you cannot hit someone from outside a no-PvP region, or from inside one. Fire and poison that was set on a player shortly before still count as PvP. Summons and minions owned by a player count as that player's attacks. By default PvP is off in every region
PvE offYou cannot damage mobs or NPCs in that region. Members and exempt players still can
Pet protectionYou cannot damage other players' tamed pets or summons. You can always dismiss your own
Safe zone (Take Damage off)Nobody takes any damage in the region, from any source
No fall damageFalling or dropping into the void in the region does not hurt
Mob damage offMobs cannot hurt players in the region (only active when the server has turned that protection on)
No knockbackYou still take hits but are not pushed around
Keep inventoryIf you die in the region you keep your items

On worlds where the server has PvP switched off entirely, other players also cannot knock you back, even with no region involved. Enemies still knock you back as usual.

PvP and safe-zone rules apply to everyone in the region. Staff with bypass are not exempt from them.

Entering and leaving

  • No-entry regions. If a region forbids entry and you are not a member, you are moved back to the last spot you stood on outside it, and you see You can't enter 'Name'.
  • No-exit regions. Used for jails, arenas and boss rooms. If you step out of one you cannot leave, you are moved back inside and see You can't leave 'Name'.
  • Mobs. Regions can stop mobs from spawning or wandering in, so some areas are always quiet. Companions and citizen NPCs from ScuffedNPCs and HyCitizens are normally left alone.
  • Blocked commands. A region can block some or all commands for non-members. You see That command is blocked in 'Name'.

Titles and greetings

When you cross a region boundary a large title appears on screen. The default is Entered <region> when you step in and Left <region> when you step out, with an optional subtitle underneath. Staff can write their own greeting and farewell for each region. Some regions also run a command for you when you enter or leave, such as a teleport or a welcome message.

Seeing regions on the map and in the world

  • World map. Open the map with M. Protected chunks are tinted with the region's colour and outlined at the edges. Regions can hide themselves from the map.
  • Border particles. Walk within about 5 blocks of a region edge and a line of coloured particles marks the boundary, in the same colour as the map tint. Nearby players see them too.
  • Region weather. A region can force its own sky, for example constant rain or clear weather, for everyone standing in it. Your normal weather returns when you leave.
  • Movement. A region can change how fast you walk or fly, allow flying for everyone, or turn flying off.
