Scuffed Translation translates public chat for you. When another player writes in a language you do not read, the server shows you their message in your own language instead. Everyone sees chat in the layout they are used to, and you can change your language or turn translation off at any time.

What gets translated

Scuffed Translation handles player chat messages only. It does not translate menus, item names, quest text, or text added by other mods.

  • Each message is translated separately for every reader, so a Spanish reader and a French reader each get their own version.
  • A translated line looks like a normal chat line (same name styling and prefixes), followed by a faint tag with your language code, for example (es). Servers can turn the tag off.
  • Your own messages are never translated back to you.
  • If the sender and the reader use the same language, the message is passed through untouched.
  • If a translation cannot be produced (the translation service is down or over its limit), you get the original message. A message is never dropped.

A few kinds of text are left alone or protected:

TextWhat happens
Messages with no letters (for example only numbers or symbols)Not translated
Messages longer than 100 wordsNot translated
Text inside double quotes, such as "Sir Rhay"Kept exactly as typed
Item names, including modded itemsKept recognizable instead of being translated literally
Common gamer shorthand (wru, brb, omw, gtg, ty, wp and similar)Expanded to full words before translating, so the result reads better
Very common phrases (hello, thanks, gg, good luck and similar)Answered instantly from a built-in phrasebook for English, Spanish, Portuguese and French

If you send a lot of messages in a short time, some of them may be delivered untranslated to other players. By default the limit is 15 translated messages per minute per player.

Your language

You normally do not have to do anything. When you join, the server reads your game client language and, if it is one of the supported languages, translates chat into it automatically. The first time you chat in a session, you get a short green notice, written in your language, that chat translation is on and how to stop it. (It does not appear if you chose your language yourself.)

If your client language is not supported, the server falls back to its default language (English unless the operator changed it).

To pick a language yourself, use /translate set <code>. This overrides your client language, switches translation on, and is remembered after you disconnect. The server also treats this language as the one you write in, so players who read the same language are not translated for.

Use /translate off to see every message exactly as typed. Use /translate on to switch it back on.
